Each betting interval, or “round,” starts when a player in turn makes a bet of one or more chips. Each player in turn must either call that bet by placing the same number of chips into the pot as the player who made the bet, raise it by putting in more than that amount of money, or drop (fold), forfeiting any chips they have already placed into the pot.

Before the cards are dealt, players place a small amount of money into the pot called an ante. This is a mandatory bet that all players must put into the pot in order to play. Once this bet has been made, the dealer then shuffles the remaining cards and deals them to each player in rotation until a jack appears. The first player to receive a jack becomes the first dealer of the hand.

Once everyone has their 2 hole cards, there is a round of betting that begins with the player to the left of the dealer. These bets are known as blinds and are mandatory for all players to make in order to create a pot of money that people can win.

After the flop is dealt, another card is revealed face up and there is an additional round of betting that begins with the player to his/her left. After this, another card is dealt face up known as the turn and there is yet another round of betting that begins with the player to their left.

When it comes to the final showdown, players reveal their hands and whoever has the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. While there is a large element of chance involved in the outcome of any specific hand, most poker decisions are based on probability and psychology rather than luck.
